Byron Bay is a beachside town located by Cape Byron, Australia's most easterly point. Byron Bay is a favourite tourist spot in the northeastern corner of New South Wales. It is located 772 kilometres north of Sydney and 165 kilometres south of Brisbane. The town (approx. population 6,000) is the nucleus of Byron Shire, which has approx. 30,000 residents.
The local Arakwal Aboriginal people's name for the area is Cavvanbah, meaning "meeting place". Lieutenant James Cook named Cape Byron after Naval officer John Byron, circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the poet Lord Byron.
The lighthouse, built in 1901, punctuates a beautiful stretch of Australia's coastline. Longboard surfers arrived in the 1960s and used natural breaks at The Pass, Watego's, and Cosy Corner. This was the beginning of Byron Bay's reputation as a tourist destination. Today the area is a favourite with cashed-up retirees and foodies from southern states, and a horde of international tourists.
